What are biotin side effects?  For starts, biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin. Biotin is also known as vitamin B7, vitamin H or coenzyme R. it is a coenzyme for carboxylase enzymes. 

Biotin is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids, isoleucine, and valine and in gluconeogenesis.

Biotin deficiency can be caused by inadequate dietary intake or inheritance of one or more inborn genetic disorders that affect biotin metabolism.

Biotin deficiency can cause mild symptom such as hair thinning and skin rash typically on the face (acne)

What causes biotin side effect?

Some possible causes of biotin deficiency would include:

  • Strict eating and long-term dieting may prevent you from getting enough vitamins and minerals from the food you eat.
  • Being pregnant also increases the risk of biotin deficiency. This is because the vitamin is very critical
  • Finally, underlying genetic disorder might also be the cause of the deficiency.

How is biotin deficiency treated?

According to health line, the treatment of biotin deficiency will often fall into two categories. The deficiency can be treated with either food or supplements.

Daily requirements for biotin aren’t difficult to reach. An adult should aim to eat at least 30 micrograms per day and 5 micrograms (mcg) per day. A pregnant woman should go for at least 35mcg per day.

Some foods with a large amount of biotin include the following:

  • Sunflower seeds
  • Dairy meats
  • Legumes, green peas
  • Carrots
  • Whole grains
  • Organs meats

Biotin is available in both multivitamins and individual supplements. The supplements typically come in three amounts 10, 50, and 100 mcg.

High amounts of biotin can create a false positive in a laboratory test for thyroid disease. These diseases can range from small, harmless goiter that does not require treatment to life-threatening cancer. Thyroid diseases involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones.

Other known side effects of taking too much biotin may include:

  • Increased risk of developing cystic acne
  • Though rare, some people might end up developing allergic reaction to biotin
  • When pregnant, high doses of biotin supplement increases the risk of having a miscarriage
  • Too much biotin reduces the effectiveness of anti-seize and low cholesterol medication.

Problems with the hair, skin, and nail are often the first sign of biotin deficiency. Taking biotin supplement can help ensure that your hair skin, nails and other parts of the body remain healthy.

For instance, in a  2015 study, found out that women with thinning hair had a significant amount of hair growth in areas affected with hair loss after taking a marine protein supplement (MPS) which contains biotin.  The same study also found out that these women had less shedding.

Pregnant women and children may need higher levels of biotin that any other groups. If you would wish to use these supplement, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the right daily intake.

Instead of going for the supplements, increase your daily intake of biotin rich foods such as:

  • Organ meats
  • Bananas
  • Mushrooms and
  • Whole Grain

Biotin side effects acne

Cystic acne is one of the effects of taking too having to mush biotin in the body. It is believed that having too much of the vitamin increase your chances of developing acne on chin, and jawline. The actual reason why this happens is known.

When the cause of acne is taking too much of biotin supplement, then it has been shown to fade once you stop taking the supplement.

When taking the supplement, ensure to take less than 2500mcg each day. Also, take plenty of water when taking the supplement to minimize the risk of developing cystic acne.

When starting out, you may need to experiment with different doses until you are sure of the right dose.

In the United States, Supplements are not monitored by the U.S Food and Drug Administration for purity and safety. When taking biotin supplements, it’s important to buy from a manufacturer that you trust.

Currently, there’s not enough research to determine all the side effects of taking too much biotin. The dosage may vary from person to person. Some medical treatment may require you to take high doses of biotin.

Candida albicans requires people to take as much as 500mg (5000mcg) of biotin each day to help manage this type of yeast infections. High doses of biotin may also be prescribed to treat diabetes.

Biotin can help increase the natural sensitivity of insulin while increasing the enzymes that help process sugar.

There is no actual recommend daily allowance for biotin. This is due to the fact that it is very rare to even have a vitamin deficiency. The following are however believed to be the safe dosage of biotin supplements:

  • Children younger than 3 years should take 10-200 mcg of biotin
  • Those between 4-6 to take 25 mcg per day
  • Those between 7-10 to take 30 mcg per day
  • Those older than 10 can take up to 100mcg

10000 mcg and 5000mcg are considered high doses of biotin and should only be used when prescribed by a professional healthcare provider.
