What Does That Strange Pimple On Eyebrow Mean?

A strange pimple on eyebrow can be detrimental to your self-esteem. Pimples on face are your body’s way of communicating. But what do they mean?  

In most of the cases, the bumps are a result of facial acne, a common health problem that often occurs above the eyebrows. Though anybody can develop this condition, it is common in teenagers.

It occurs when dead skin cells and excess sebum plugs the pores on your face. Bacteria may also accumulate in the pores causing inflammation that leads to skin redness.

On face, the area over the eyebrows is often affected because it contains a lot of the oil glands. This article offers an insight into:

Zits, pimple, cyst or lump on eyebrow are not uncommon. Most are harmless, and will often clear without treatment or with simple at-home care.

The conspicuous nature of an eyebrow pimple can annoying ad detrimental to your self-esteem. But what causes an eyebrow pimple? Who develops them and how do you get rid of these annoying pimples?

Anybody can develop these pimples. Here are some of the common causes of these annoying bump?

1. Acne

Acne vulgaris is a common cause of bumps or a pimple not only on face but also on other parts of the body. Acne typically occurs when dead skin cells clog the skin pores on the surface of the skin.

Acne often causes whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. These bumps are common on face, forehead, and chest and on shoulder. Though it affects all people, it is common in teenagers. Acne can be persistent, though there is effective treatment are available.

Acne vulgaris can be caused by the following factors:

  • Increased sebum production
  • Excess activity of androgen hormone
  • Clogging of hair follicle with sebum and excess dead skin cells
  • Bacterial infection of the hair follicles

2. Folliculitis

A strange pimple on eyebrow can also be caused by folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles. The inflammation of the pores can result from a blocked pores or from damage resulting from plucking your eyebrows.

Folliculitis is common but harmless. It is not a life-threatening condition. When occurring on the face, however, the pimples can be painful, itchy, sore and embarrassing to have. Severe infection can lead to permanent hair loss and scarring.

Mild cases of folliculitis will often clear with simple at-home care. For serious or recurrent cases, you may need to see your healthcare provider for specialized skin care.

According to Mayo Clinic, there are two types of this infection. The first type is superficial which involves on part of the follicle and deep folliculitis which involves the entire follicle, this type is said to be more severe.

3. Melanoma

The strange bump on eyebrow can also be a sign of melanoma, a common form of skin cancer. With this condition, dead skin cells do not die off but rather continue to reproduce, this is what results in a random lump on skin surface that will often continue to grow over time.

Melanoma skin growth can occur on any part of the skin. A melanoma skin growth on eyebrow can be shown with by the following symptoms:

  • Irregularly shaped bump
  • The bump may have many colors or uneven distribution of colors
  • a bump larger than 6 mm
  • the growth may keep changing over time

4. Cyst

Depending on the nature of the strange eyebrow pimple, it could also be considered a dermoid or sebaceous cyst. Dermoid cysts are congenital defect present at birth. These cysts are formed when pores become filled with skin tissue.

A dermoid cyst is often harmless, painless and not cause for concern. They, however, vary in size from small bump to large growths. If it is bothering you, you can have your dermatologist remove it.

The bump can also be a sebaceous cyst. These cysts are formed when oil glands in skin become blocked causing a soft pouch of skin to develop. A sebaceous or epidermal cyst can develop on any part of the body, including around the eyebrow.

Though eyebrow cyst is often harmless and non-threatening, urgent medical diagnosis is required to help establish whether or not the growth requires treatment or not.

5. Waxing or threading your eyebrows

Poor hair removal can also lead to formation of painful, large pimples on eyebrow. The bump may result in damaging the hair follicles or an ingrown hair that forms when hair grows back to the skin.

When threading, to prevent the formation of these pimples, do the following:

  • apply a warm compress to numb the area before threading
  • avoid touching the eyebrows immediately after threading
  • after shaving, waxing or threading, apply a cold compress to soothe your skin from itching
  • also, wash your wash with lukewarm water then apply a mild petroleum jelly

6. Allergy

Pimples on eyebrow can also result from an allergic reaction. These reactions can result from foods, drugs or physical contact with allergens.

The bumps may appear red, swollen, inflamed or itchy. This can be annoying and embarrassing to have for some people.

Though the bumps are harmless, an allergic reaction can be life-threatening especially if not treated in time. These pimples may result from:

  • contact dermatitis
  • mosquito and bed bug bites
  • reaction from using expired cosmetics
  • using harmful and sensitive makeups

7. Hormonal fluctuation

Hormonal fluctuation is also a common cause of a pimple in both men and women. Women are however more likely to develop the bumps than men.

On face or on eyebrow, these pimples are likely to appear after or before period.  These bumps are also common in women on hormonal birth control pills.

Most of these bumps will clear after a week or two, however, if a pimple becomes painful, irritating or annoying, you may want to have your health care provider look at it as soon as possible.

8. Thyroid complication

Pimples on face can also be a sign of thyroid complications. Your thyroid glands are responsible for secreting hormones that regulate growth and development by controlling the rate of your body metabolism.

Thyroid complication can range from small, harmless goiter to life-threatening cancer. Thyroid complication involves the production of thyroid hormones.

  • Hyperthyroidism occurs when there is too much production of thyroid hormones
  • Hypothyroidism occurs when there is insufficient secretion of thyroid hormone

A cystic pimple on eyebrow

A cyst is a membranous sac or cavity of abnormal character in the body containing fluid. A cystic pimple on eyebrow will often appear as a raised bump of skin around the area of the eyebrow.

Depending on what type the cyst is, it may or may not need to be removed. A cystic pimple on eyebrow can be caused by different conditions.

For starters, the cyst can be caused by acne vulgaris, or folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles on face. In rare cases, the cyst can also be caused by melanoma (a malignant tumor associated with skin cancer)

Eyebrow cyst is often asymptomatic, but in rare cases, it could cause pain and become very sensitive. The bump could vary in size, but in most of the cases, it is often nothing to wary about. Large cyst causing pain may need to be removed.

Bump on eyebrow, not pimple

Not all bumps on face are pimples. A pimple can be defined as a small hard inflamed spot on the skin. In other cases, the lump on eyebrow can be an osteoma, this is a hard, bony growth in the skull.

The bump is slow growing, benign and in most cases asymptomatic. When growing on the bone, the bump is known as homoplastic osteoma, on the other hand, when the bump grows on the tissues it is known as heteroplastic osteoma.

The actual cause of osteoma is unknown. Large osteoma bump on eyebrow can cause facial pain, severe headache, and in some cases an infection due to obstruction of the nasofrontal duct.

When you are not sure whether the bump is a pimple or not, it is important to have it checked out as soon as possible. Your healthcare provider may need to perform a physical exam to establish this.

Treatment may vary depending on the severity of the symptoms and what the actual cause of the bump is.

Around eyebrow, the pimple may be swollen, painful, hard, and tender to touch. The lump may appear under eyebrow, above eyebrow, or on forehead between eyebrows.

The characteristic of an eyebrow pimple or bump will often vary depending on what the underlying cause is. Though not always, a hard bump on face may be a sign of skin cancer.

The hard bump may be caused by uncontrolled division of abnormal cells on part of the body.

Cancerous lumps are often small, hard and painless. Non-melanoma cancer is the most common form of cancer. After diagnosis, treatment may vary depending on the type and stage of cancer.

Most effective options include surgery, chemo, and radiation therapy.

Eyebrow pimple treatment

The treatment options for a pimple on eyebrow may vary depending on what the underlying cause is. Most effective treatment options may include the following:

  • Topical ointment to relieve inflammation
  • For large pimples, steroid cream or injection can be used to bring down the swelling
  • Over-the-counter painkillers can also be used to relieve pain

Unless you are sure of what the cause of the bump is, avoid self-medicating. If the bump takes long to go away, have your dermatologist look at it and prescribed the most appropriate treatment option.

How to get rid of a pimple on forehead, above eyebrow

As said, most bumps on face are harmless and will often clear even without any treatment. Here are some effective natural remedies you can use to get rid of a pimple on eyebrow:

a) Apply a warm compress to relieve swollen bump

Applying a warm compress to a hard swollen pimple on eyebrow can help relieve the inflammation and itching and irritation. When doing this, be careful not to pop the bump.

b) Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera gel is a great natural remedy you can use to get rid of a pimple. The gel has great anti-bacterial and pain relieving properties. Applying the gel on a popped bump can also help speed up the healing process.

c) Apple cider vinegar

You can also use apple cider vinegar to get rid of a pimple. ACV is a strong antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-fungal remedy. Acv is especially good for cleansing an infected sebaceous cyst.

d) Lemon juice

Lemon juice contains anti-bacterial and anti-histamine properties that can help fight bacterial infections. This can help reduce swelling, redness and also relieve itching.

All you need to do is apply a fresh lemon juice over a pimple at least twice a day.
